ERRRR....the evil output coupler nut that DOES FALL OFF when you least want it to. This nut is left handed which means in forward it tightens, in reverse it can spin off. SO, do not jump from fwd to rev with out stopping, this is another reason why. You can spin this nut loose. The crazy aspect to this nut is that it is tighten to a torque spec, then it is "CAULKED" which means dented, into that keyway on the shaft. Well, from the ones I have seen, the dent is too small, so the nut can back off. OK, no big deal, YES IT IS, your shaft pulls off your trans when in reverse....it happened to me.

So, the easy fix is just tighten it back on. Look closely, that is a spanner nut, you need a special tool. PLUS, NO YANMAR GUY WILL TOUCH THIS unless they remove the transmission! Why? Because that is the specs, if this nut falls off, the trans must be pulled, sent into the shop and the shop must re-touque this nut and re dent it. GIVE ME A BREAK! MAKE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. So, this nut is WHY I am into this transmission replacement issue. It fell off 2 years ago in Maine in a bad situation, no one in Maine would touch it on the boat, so I tightened it and ran for Maryland never using reverse the entire way.

Then at home, I pulled off the nut and coupler, I made my own spanner wrench and tightened it on as tight as I could turn it. We ran it like that for 2 years and then this summer 2011, it started a very small oil leak...WHERE....in MAINE.

Again, I tried to get a mechanic to touque this on the boat....NOPE they would not touch it, tranny must come off. Sorry, I will wrap the leak and run for Maryland where I will fix it myself (with the help of a great friend) So that is the full story....

PS:
During this run from Maine to Maryland with this "loose" nut, we had....#1 A bashing and beating exiting the Cape Cod Canal, worst conditions ever...#2 A blast offshore from Block Island to Cape May 200 miles running from Hurricane Irene....#3 a final 100 mile run Cape May to Rock Hall MD where we tied up 12 hours before Irene hit us. It is now time to fix this output copuler nut, so off with the tranny and on with a new one....DONE DEAL
