I am in the process of replacing the holding tank our new IP 29. The great folks at Dura-Weld were able to fabricate one from old specs they have retained for IPs. This was done in only 1 week! SHould have it installed this coming week.
With that said the horrible odor from the leaked waste has permeated everything on the boat so the interior needs a complete cleaning.
My questions are what is the best cleaning agent to eliminate these odors, and what is the the best way to clean and eliminate the odors from the cushions? A final question is how to prevent tank odors in the future? There were absolutely no holding tank odors when i bought the boat. Cleanest boat I had ever been on odor wise.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks for your suggestion. There is a device that was left on the boat after purchase that could be an ozone generator. I was told it was a dehumidifier by the broker but it doesn't look like any i have seen. It does look like ozone generators i have seen on the market. I will get back to the boat in a few weeks and check it out. Have you used one? How do you feel about the safety of using one?

Joel:

We use kanberragel.com/ products on our IP 35 and it works the best over a long period of time. The clean up we would use vinegar and water in a spray bottle of bleach and water in a spray bottle. Every boat should have Kanberra Gel in use in the sewer locker and storage lockers. Works great. You can order this from many places, even Amazon Prime of course..

It is effective but can be very dangerous especially in the confines of a hull.

Hi Captain Krusty,

Unfortunately, our experience is almost exactly like yours. We settled on a 1994 IP 29 on July 3 and immediately discovered a leak in the holding tank. If you have any particular person that you dealt with to get a new holding tank, we'd be grateful for contact info.

Thanks,
Jay and Sharon

Sorry about your misfortune. Talk to Gareth at Dura-Weld. They have tank dimensions for the IP 29 and all others. He will tell you about 3 weeks but he easily yielded to expediting construction when I informed him that my boat mechanic had a small window of time upcoming to do the replacement and we had the tank in about 9 days. The work was done and the tank is functioning great. I had all hoses replaced also.
I highly recommend the Kanberra odor control that Hayden recommended . It's great. The guys did a great job cleaning up the disaster and the odor wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. After sailing a few days the boat is fresh with no lingering smell.
