I had to replace my anchor chain - probably 16 years old. Everyone at the dock said it was definately 3/8 size - but when I got the new chain I found that the old chain was 5/16 - so I am getting a new gypsy for my Lofrans Kobra windlass. I had been online and on IP forums and it seemed like 300 feet of chain was appropriate for an IP 420. So I purchased 400 feet of Acco 3/8 inch - 300 for primary anchor and 100 for secondary anchor (going to attach to rode) -640 lbs. Now my IP 420 bow is too deep and stern is lifting up enough to see the rudder. What is an appropriate length of anchor chain. I 300 feet on one side in the forward starboard anchor well. Do I need to pare back on chain or move some to the smaller storage chambers just behind the anchor well? I purchased a Rocco 33 as primary anchor. Thank you for your help.

Welcome, hope you enjoy your boat as much as we have enjoyed our 420.

We carry about 300ft of 5/16 on our primary (Rocna) and only about 60ft on our secondary (CQR).

With genset, solar, dinghy hanging astern out all seems to even out for us. Also the 420 tends to squat astern quite a bit while moving.

Thanks Lamar - we do have davits on the back - had to dispose of the aging dinghy ( that's another story) - I bet when we get a new dinghy -and heavy engine - It will balance out the boat .
