Island Packet PHRF Ratings, Document by Jim Campbell
The following are all the PHRF basic handicap ratings by PHRF-New England that are listed for Island Packets on their current website at http://phrfne.org . As I said on my post the other day, the ratings are not consistent region to region so if someone wants to know their actual rating with all the adjustments, it’s best to spend the +/- $20.00 and get a certificate. The Cruising rating generally modifies the base by +6 sec for roller furl jib & +6 more for a 2 blade fixed prop & strut (a 3 blade gives you three more sec, total 9), 2 blade feathering –3, & a 3 blade feathering carry zero adjustment. “Cruising Class” up here means “No Spinnakers Allowed”, head sail of not greater than 155%LP.

Most boats racing in the “cruising class” also qualify for a “recreational adjustment”. This was introduced a few years back in an attempt to get more “cruisers” interested and competitive in club racing.
To qualify a boat must:
1. Have no exotic sails – Kevlar, etc.
2. Have not more than two jibs one <110% Lp,; one < 110% & < 155%
3. For cutter rigs, both jibs must be roller furling
All these ratings have been given to specific boats which may not have been factory standard. As a comparison my 1987 Catalina 27, inboard diesel, one 150% roller furl jib, and a fixed two blade prop had a Cruising Rating of 234; a similar Erickson 26 had the same rating. Also note that there isn’t any modification for age of the vessel. The Catalina (next to last year produced) carried the same rating as a similarly equipped early 70’s boat which would weigh about 600 lbs less per factory spec. Not quite fair, bu
