We installed a B&G Type 1 hydraulic ram pilot on Island Spirit with the control head located in a navpod at the helm. This pilot networks to the wind instrument and the GPS/Radar system. Installed by Rob Glebe of Rock Hall, MD.

Access hole cut to work on rudder post and arm installs. A must have!

Arm position testing and ram location testing. Edson 10" arm, could have used 8" arm.

Test ram location and alignment. Plywood shelf will be built, ram through bolted.

Goal is to keep the ram as low as possible to take up less locker space.

Paint is sanded off, plywood is epoxied in with the west system epoxy.

Ram on shelf and height is perfect. Arm movement is tested, ram is mounted.

Completed shelf w/ram through bolted. Top is 2 layers of 3/4" marine plywood epoxied coated.

Rudder arm was pinned and tapped to the rudder post.

Pilot control head mounted in sail locker forward inside wall.

NAVpod study with pilot head, radar, and ram mic set up.

Rudder reference, mounted to headliner at access panel in qtr. berth.

NAVpod installed and first test run with radar on. Chesapeake Bay Bridge on screen. Annapolis

Remote mounted on seat, wire pulls out and reaches the bow. Would not buy again. Not needed.

Closure of access hole matches almond walls. Teak box encloses new Edson CDi helm.

Heading for OCEAN, C&D canal heading out to Cape May, then to Newport June 2002. Auto 99%
