How many owners of IP 380's have had a leaking holding tank? Has Island Packet assumed any resposibility for it? Brian

Brian.
I am not sure if how many 380 tanks have failed, but i know many have been well documented on www.ipphotos.com or discussed via our ipmail list server. The factory has not assumed any responsibility for these failures. I doubt that they ever will.

Good morning everyone

At last we can report on the very successful replacement of our water and holding tanks on the above boat. It was not as straight forward as could have been as the original design and construction of the boat had not allowed for work of this sort to be undertaken without major cutting up of the floor and sub structure, but we are pleased to say that the Marine Team at Mylor Yacht Harbour did a very good job for us.

The process in a nutshell was as follows ;

*Remove both glass fibre and wood floor which was glued down
*Remove water tanks which had to be cut out as impossible to remove otherwise
*Measure and order new tanks ( water tank had to be made in two, so they would fit)
*Refit and plumb in new tanks
*Replace floor and lay new holly and teak laminate flooring as the original had to be cut out and could not be reused due to damage. As we could not match existing pattern of wooden floor we had to change in all cabins and main saloon.
*The floor then had to be varnished.

The water and holding tanks were supplied by Tek Tanks and are in a food grade polythene so will not deteriorate. I must admit its wonderful to have water from the tanks without the aluminium deposits that clogged up our taps before.

It has taken a while for us to let you know what has gone on as we have now taken our boat down into the Med so we are all set for sun, sand and sea this year. We decided on this after the wet and soggy summer last year.

Please feel free to contact us if you require further information.

All the best Alan & Tricia Lane

Where was the holding tank located on an IP 380?

We have an IP 44, and the tank was half under the forward head and half under the floor of the forward cabin. We removed the flooring, but did not want to chainsaw out the forward head, so we cut the old aluminum tank out in pieces, and put back in a 17 gallon holding tank, with an automatic Electroscan treatment system so that it would process and discharge on an ongoing basis. Has worked well until we got to the bahamas and macerator failed. thank goodness for the honey boat pump outs in GT/Stocking Island area. But I now carry a spare macerator.

We did have a word with IP re procedure on removal of holding and water tanks they sent a drawing through and then distanced themselves from the problem. I do agree with Hayden I don't think they will ever accept responsibility for the predicament we find ourselves in, a shame really it would work wonders for public relations. All the best Tricia

Agreed as to public relations. It isn't that any of us expect them to pay for it, but some engineering help on how to fix, complete with best practices solution, would go a long ways.
