I have a 2002 IP420 that has a rudder that shakes. Every 15-30 seconds or so, there is a shudder that lasts for one to three seconds then stops. I noticed there is freeplay in the forward rose joint (aka heim joint) and I wonder if this could be the cause. According to my Whitlock manual this either part# AHFT10 or AHFT12. There is a teflon bearing in the joint that looks like needs replacing. Anyone know if this is a user-sercicable part and where i can find parts?  Also curious to know if this is typical. Thanks!

Hello PF,
Had a similar issue on our 1996 IP45. We found some loose fittings on the rack and pinion steering and simply tightened them up. Problem solved.
In regards to replacing the part #'s mentioned is there any manufacturer info on the system. They may have bulletins on their website. Good luck as that shudder mentioned is uncomfortable!

Hello PF,
I have a similar age IP420 and have just stared noticing similar symptoms to the ones that you experienced. I'm interested to know whether you have cured it? Many thanks, Keith

Keith, it appears slightly better after replacing the ball joint, but definitely not a cure. I noticed prop wash seems to play a part as well.

Many thanks. I’ll have a look at the ball joints. Mine seems worse going downwind as the load comes off the rudder. K
