i need a new autopilot

i am looking at buying a very reliable autopilot for my recent IP38. currently has an old Alpha 3000 with a 12 volt linear drive which is direct coupled to the rudderpost.
want something i can install relatively easily.
let the answers and opinions begin...

I would be interested in this as awell. I have an IP38 also with a B&G autopilot, but want to install a ready to go backup in case of failure.

The problem with a quick install pilot, which might be a wheel pilot, is that they are for smaller boats. This one:

Raymarine Wheel Pilot is for 16,000 lbs or less, so this would work in calm seas.

I too have the B&G ram pilot on our IP35-165 1994 installed in 2002, and eventually will need to upgrade or replace this pilot. Bobby has replaced his B&G with a Raymarine ram and it dropped right in place of the B&G, so that may be the best way to go.

Another resource is a spare B&G ram, which I would buy from:

So, maybe it is best to carry a spar ram, that could be dropped into place when the old one dies.

I am considering purchasing and installing a CPT autopilot on our IP38. We already have a Monitor wind vane, so the wheel adaptor for that is mounted on the forward side of the wheel. The wheel adaptor for the CPT would have to go on the aft side (or vice versa).

I am concerned about leg (knee) room when steering by hand. Does anyone have a Monitor and CPT on their IP or an opinion they'd care to offer?
