Chainplate repair/replace? was created by raceboat61-S
Gents,
Our IP-31 has the starboard chainplate attachment at the shroud base appearing to be pulling up at the caprail. I'm afraid we have a need to repair or replace. We can't even inspect because of the interior sidepanel and interior cabinetry masking access. Any others with experience in repairing/replacing chainplates.
Is it possible to attach the shroud to an external flat stainless strap system bolted thru the side of the hull?

Mike:
I spoke with Bill at the factory and he will be calling you or contacting you about this. Yes, several others have had this happen. The good news right now is that the Island Packet Factory is now running a refit and repair service. One of the key items they will repair or replace is chainplates. I also see that you are FL based, so it would be easy for you to get your boat to the factory. As for inspecting your chain plate it can only be done with some removal of the interior walls and cabinets. Some owners have done this via themselves but I view this as a non-owner service job. I would want the factory to do this. I do not know the price of chainplate replacements, so call the factory and start there.
I do know of a service guy in Texas that will come to your boat and in 4-5 days with 3 guys replace them. He has done several and has bid about 9-10K to do all of them. His web site is...CHECK THAT WORK..
cosmeticboatrepair.com/chainplate_repair.html

but I would start with the factory as my #1 resource.

Please keep us posted on the progress.

Do you have a photo you could send? Is it, perhaps, just the chainplate trim cover that has pulled up somehow? I don't believe we have ever had a chainplate pull up through the deck. . .

Best,
Bill

no current problems with our standing rigging, however it is 25 years old (I.P. 38 #18)
and we are planning on extended cruising this fall. we are in st. augustine, florida (just back from 5 mos in the bahamas) and looking into replacing chainplates/rigging. any thoughts?
thanks,
scott

Scott: I have to say I would replace them. Chances are they might last longer, but the wisdom says 10-15 year lifespan on structural ss is all you are going to get. You are well past that period no matter how well cared for the yacht has been and there is no way to test for problems without destroying the chainplatee. Consider it insurance. . .

bill,
thanks so much for your quick response. we had pretty much accepted that this would be
necessary; now we just need to find they best way to do it. i've learned to do the bulk
of my projects, but i think this one is beyond me. can you recommend an option or 2?

Scott,
Did you replace the chainplates on your IP 38? If so, where did you have the work done and how much did it cost? I have a contract to purchase a 1988 IP 38 located near St Augustine, and would like to have the work done somewhere in the area. Can you recommend a yard/contractor?
Thanks, Tim

Tim,
No, we still have not replaced them. We were a little shocked when we found total cost (transport, storage, chainplates, standing rigging) would be over $15,000 at the factory. I intend to look into Hayden's recommendation of the Texas company this summer. We will probably be staying in green cove springs (20 miles from st. Augustine) this summer.

My gut reaction is:
The Island Packet Factory is the BEST option where we can get these replaced. Who better to do this than the factory. After all, they have installed more than anyone else.
